I discovered something really interesting not too long ago. And it was very simple and a huge punch to the gut. If you do not have a website as a company it chips at your legitimacy as a company. I know it sounds really weird but think about it.

When you talk to people, whether they are company employees, senior management or a consultant or entrepreneur at some point, to get information, you will naturally ask what the website address is. When I mentioned to people I was a writer the first thing they would ask me was where they could read my work.

Initially I wasn’t so comfortable doing that. I wanted a sense of anonymity but after a few looks of judgment and loss of potential business. I had to change. I had to put up a website. That wasn’t bullying that was an eye opener to the reality of business in the digital age. I will walk you through a couple of reasons why you need a website. In a subsequent post I will walk you through what to put on your site.

  1. 1. HOW CAN I FIND YOU?

There is a reason they call it a website address. If I want to find out about you I will Google your name or company name. And Voila! I know how to find you.

  1. 2. YOU ARE LEGIT

When people can’t find you online, it tends to raise questions. We live in a world where being online adds legitimacy not just to business, but to individuals. When you have a website it is your digital global ID. It makes you legal. In the words of MC Hammer, you are “too legit to quit”.

  1. 3. YOU DICTATE HOW PEOPLE PERCEIVE YOU

Your website helps you define your business to the world. When people click on your domain name they want to find something. What is that unique offering you have that will keep them coming? Your website needs to tell people why they should care about your business. And it also helps them decide how to engage with you on your terms.

  1. 4. YOU REMAIN TOP OF MIND

I was off social media for about 6 weeks. I was tired of it. When I did return online one friend of mine told me that “it was as if I was dead”. Out of site, out of mind: that is the digital social sphere your business operates in. If you do not communicate regularly with people, they never bother with you and switch off pretty fast. What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that even if you only have one comment on your posts or updates, there are thousands of others just watching silently aware of what you are doing. You still remain top of mind as long as you communicate regularly and relevant to your line of work. Once you stop they forget you as fast as they forget what they ate for breakfast.

  1. 5. YOU BECOME AN AUTHORITY

You may have seen news interviews or documentaries with specialists or experts. An expert is someone who is conversant with a specialty area from experience and knowledge. And if your business, through your website consistently addresses that particular area of need or expertise you become the go to expert. No ifs’ or buts about it.
